CLEVELAND — As the Indians drop their long-time moniker, a few changes could be in store for the team’s home of Progressive Field.

What You Need To Know

  • The Cleveland Indians will be asking for approval for new “Guardians” signage on top of the left field scoreboard

  • City officials will consider the request Thursday

  • The city and county are also considering bills that would provide public funding to help renovate Progressive Field

  • If approved, renovations at Progressive Field would begin in Spring 2022

The most immediate change is the Indians logo, which will need to be replaced as the new team name becomes the “Guardians.” With the name change taking effect during the offseason, the Indians are seeking approval from city officials to change the signage on top of the left field scoreboard.

On Thursday, the Downtown/Flats Design Review Advisory Committee will consider the Indians’ proposal.

Meanwhile, the team awaits votes from the city and county councils on public funds that will be used to help renovate Progressive Field. Overall, the Indians said remodeling Progressive Field will cost $435 million.

To help fund the project, Cuyahoga County is expected to chip in more than $8 million annually for 15 years while the city also provides more than $8 million per year. The state is being asked to spend $2 million annually for 15 years.

On Monday, Cleveland City Council put its portion of the funding request on the agenda. The Cleveland City Council Finance Committee is expected to discuss the project with a final vote coming as early as next week, a spokesperson for Cleveland City Council said.

Last Friday, Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish submitted legislation for the county’s portion of the Progressive Field renovation project.

According to city documents released Monday, construction on transforming the left field terraces could begin around Opening Day 2022. The construction, some of which would take place during the playing season, would conclude by Opening Day 2025.
