WORTHINGTON, Ohio — Gov. Mike DeWine will not require high school student athletes and coaches to get the COVID-19 vaccine in order to participate in fall sports.

At the same time, state health officials warn if athletes and coaches do not get vaccinated, there could be a surge in COVID-19 cases.

DeWine said anyone who tests positive or is exposed to the virus will still be subject to quarantine rules in place before the pandemic. He also said the vaccine is the key to student athletes staying in the game.

"This is the way to ensure virtually 100% that you're going to be able to continue to play ball, or you're going to continue to run or you're going to be able to be in theater or whatever your passion is," said DeWine.

DeWine said Friday that more announcements are coming in the days and weeks ahead to further incentivize Ohioans to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
