CLEVELAND, Ohio — While many Ohio businesses have been forced to shut down over the last few weeks, a Cleveland landmark is keeping its doors open.
- Remains open and fully stocked
- Fresh meats and produce
- Offering curbside pickup
Cleveland's West Side Market remains open and is "fully stocked."
Some vendors at the open-air market say they have been very busy during this health crisis.
“Business has been crazy busy last week. We sold 3 cattle, this week we have 5 cattle and a hind,” said Minnie Zarefoff, owner, Jim’s Meats.
Not every vendor remains open. On Sunday, about 40 percent were closed, but customers were still ordering the essentials.
“Meats, cheeses, eggs, seafood, people are supporting that some guys are struggling down here a little bit with the higher-end goods -- cakes and cookies, stuff like that, people aren’t really...they want staples right now,” said Don Whitaker/president, United West Side Market Tenants Association
Don Whitaker is the president of the United West Side Market Tenants Association. He’s been impressed with what the city has done to keep the market clean and the shoppers safe.
“The City of Cleveland is taking care, they have this called “fight back.” They have schedule rounds on all the doors, anything that’s being touched, Tuesdays and Thursdays, they come in here and take care of the building when we are closed, everyone is doing their part right now,” said Whitaker.
And there’s even an alternative for customers who don’t feel comfortable coming inside.
“If you are afraid to come in, that is not an issue with us. You can go ahead and come on the curb there and we will bring out the order to you,” said Zarefoff.
A changing business in a changing world – all keeping one of Cleveland’s most popular hotspots abuzz.
