CHARLOTTE, N.C. Behind his confidence, and sometimes loud personality, Vic Werany thrives on helping people.

His old neighbor, Gabriel, has Spina Bifida. When Werany learned the financial cost that has on his family, he decided to step up. He turned to the skateboarding community which is a group him and his son know well. He created Skater's Helping Realize Extraordinary Dreams (SHRED).

Teenagers from a number of middle and high school art classes in the Charlotte area paint skateboards that go on auction to benefit Gabriel and other families with Spina Bifida. Over the years, they've raised thousands of dollars.

“This is the feeling that I chase every year...when I hand each of those family's a bag of $5,000 and the look on their faces and knowing that helps out. I'm always chasing that feeling,” Werany said. “I have goosebumps just thinking about it. To know that I've been able to affect somebody in that way.”

This is the eighth year for the SHRED event. Last year, it raised $18,000. The skate deck art show and auction is at Unknown Brewery in Charlotte from 1 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 8.

Werany is a well-known face in uptown Charlotte as the "Chili Man." He sells hot dogs on North Tryon Street.
