There’s an ongoing debate over whether the federal government should continue funding public news organizations like National Public Radio.

Last week, the CEO of NPR Katherine Maher was grilled by Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

She rejected the notion that the organization carries a liberal bias.

The contentious hearing came just a day after President Donald Trump said he would quote “love to” strip the outlet’s federal funding, calling it a “waste of money.”

As the Trump administration targets NPR, NY1 is highlighting a new book which explores the history of the radio network founded in the 1970s.

It is published by Simon & Schuster and is called “On Air: The Triumph and Tumult of NPR.” The book documents the evolution of the news organization and how it became a trusted voice across the nation.

Steve Oney, a veteran journalist and the author of the book, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Thursday to talk about NPR’s past and future.
