Eric Elwell is the chief meteorologist for Spectrum News 1 in Ohio. Eric has been forecasting the weather in Ohio for more than 20 years. Before joining Spectrum News 1, Eric served as chief meteorologist for WHIO-TV in Dayton, the number one CBS affiliate in the country, for nearly 4 years. He led a team that received several Emmy awards for severe weather coverage.

Prior to WHIO, Eric worked with WBNS in Columbus from 2012 to 2015 where he received an Emmy Award for his coverage of multiple tornadoes. However, Eric started in Ohio as chief meteorologist for the Ohio News Network (ONN) where he developed the weather department for that station in 1998. During his time at ONN, he was able to lead the weather team to numerous Ohio Associated Press awards for "Best Weather Operation" in Ohio, including in 2009, 2010 and 2011.   Eric began his weather career at WTVA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Tupelo, Miss., and then worked for KAKE-TV, the ABC affiliate in Wichita, Kansas.

Eric has a degree in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University. He later earned the American Meteorological Society's Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation. The AMS grants the CBM designation to broadcast meteorologists who meet established criteria for scientific competence and effective communication skills in their weather presentations. He also has his Seal of Approval from the National Weather Association and was selected in 2011 to sit on the NWA seal evaluation board.

Eric’s hobbies include the exploring area parks, traveling to warm beach, watching college sports and spending time with his family. Eric also regularly hosts high school students from Europe to experience America for an entire school year. When not busy with work, his kids or his furbabies "Tucker" and "Kasi", you may find Eric storm chasing.

“No storm is ever exactly the same, and when it comes right down to it, the best part of my job—and the most important part—is helping people plan their lives and stay safe from the next storm.” Elwell said. “I am very honored and excited to get to do something I love in a state I have called home for over 20 years.”
