Record Store Day, a biannual event aimed at promoting independent record and music stores, kicked off Saturday, with vinyl enthusiasts lined up at Rock and Soul in Midtown, Manhattan.

“Bring a book, bring a blanket, bring a chair. It’s not the beach, but it’ll do,” customer Steven Weissman, who lined up outside the record store around 5 p.m. Friday, said.

“It’s just very cold. I’m very tired,” Hailey Helsel, another customer near the front of the line, said.

Dephyrus Jiang was the first in line for the Wicked vinyl, which he managed to score once the doors opened at 8 a.m. He got on line at 3 p.m. on Friday.

“I’ve been doing this since day one. I’ve done different record stores, this is one of the best though,” said Bruce Alexander, who says he’s taken part in Record Store Day every year since it began.

Many major artists release exclusive vinyls to drum up excitement, including Charli XCX, Taylor Swift, The Grateful Dead, Post Malone, and Fleetwood Mac.

“Getting some vinyl that they’re releasing today, the exclusives, and to support the stores, I’ve been going to a number of stores. This store here is great,” Weissman, who left with a giant box of records, said.

Music fans dig through the bins brimming with records to get titles on their wish list.

“I’m out here for the Mathematics Wu-Tang album,” Andre Vincent Sanders said. “So I’ve been out here since yesterday, this is awesome.”

Helsel said it was her first time in a record store. “I’m very excited for Taylor Swift,” she said.

“I tend to go for the 60s and 70s, a lot of the older stuff I grew up with, the Rolling Stones, Out of Our Heads,” Alexander said.

Some customers said they prefer physical music media over digital formats or streaming.

“Vinyl is back in stock now because a lot of people want to hear that authentic, rich sound as opposed to listening to the digital sounds,” Sanders said.

Alexander says he only ever listens to music on his record players.

“I’m so totally into collecting vinyl and CDs, I don’t really download anything, I support the music, I have thousands of records.”

Gabriela Gallegos stood in line for her best friend who is a vinyl collector, but also left with a record of her own. She says being in there is nostalgic.

“I mean it’s been so long since I’ve bought a physical copy of something, and just being here definitely reminds me of those times, like when I was younger and a CD would come out. I always loved Taylor Swift, I remember my mom would take me to Walmart or Target to go get the album,” Gallegos said.

Record store fans also said it’s not just about making purchases, it’s also the vibe you get in the stores.

Live DJs were performing and the selections are all vinyl.
