CINCINNATI, Ohio — Recent frigid temperatures have resulted in more water main leaks and breaks, according to the City of Cincinnati.
As of Jan. 27, the city said in a press release that they were dealing with 68 leaks/breaks in total and that nine crews were “working around the clock” on repairs.
“When water temperatures hover around the 39-degree mark, water density changes and the thermal expansion and contraction in the pipes causes increased stress on the distribution system, leading to more leaks and breaks,” the release reads.
The repairs are handled on a priority system dependent on the severity of the damage, how many customers it affects, the loss of water pressure and the hazard the leak/break causes, according to the release.
While waiting for repair, the city said areas around leaks are monitored and salted regularly.
“GCWW (Greater Cincinnati Water Works) had five current shutdowns as of Monday, affecting 33 customers,” the release reads. “Another six shutdowns were planned, which will affect 154 customers. It generally takes 6-8 hours to repair a water main break.”
The city said customers can report leaks online or by calling 513-591-5060 or emailing gcww.leaks@gcww.cincinnati-oh.gov.
Residents can stay updated in a variety of ways.
They can follow Greater Cincinnati Water Works on social media or consult their outage map. They can also sign up for free text alerts online or by calling 513-591-7700.
“GCWW appreciates the public’s patience and understanding as it works to make repairs,” the release reads.
