That’s why school districts like Gahanna are cautioning parents to make sure their children are bundled up.
They urge parents to keep an eye on the weather conditions and dress their child accordingly, making sure they’re warm enough to wait for the bus.
Gahanna schools also have a program that lets the older kids take part in safety duty to keep an eye on the younger ones. Among their responsibilities is acting as a crossing guard, making sure their fellow students are crossing the slippery roads safely.
It’s a job the fifth graders take seriously.
“I like helping the children and making sure they’re safe, making sure that they don't get run over by a car, and it's helping them feel like making sure they don't slip and hurt themselves," said Claire Futagaki, a fifth grader at High Point Elementary
Gahanna parents are also encouraged to download the Here Comes the Bus app in the wintertime. It can track when the bus is coming, keeping their kids from waiting out in the cold for too long.
