COLUMBUS, Ohio — “It's the hub of all things traffic around the state of Ohio,” said the Ohio Department of Transportation press secretary, Matt Bruning.

What You Need To Know

  • The Ohio Department of Transportation monitors 1,100 live cameras across the state 24/7, 365 days a year to ensure Ohio drivers are safe on the road

  • All of the live cameras help ODOT employees contact law enforcement and GEICO safety patrol in case they need more resources to help drivers stay safe

  • Along with keeping yourself safe, ODOT always wants drivers to keep ODOT employees safe; nine employees have already been struck this winter

Staffed 24/7, 365 days a year, is the Ohio Department of Transportation’s traffic management center.

“They’ll be sending alerts to motorists if you’re looking to travel over the especially over these next couple of days when it comes to the winter weather operations, you know, you will be checking OHGO, hopefully, and seeing what those conditions look like out there ahead of time. So all of that is controlled by our traffic management center,” said Bruning.

ODOT employees monitor 1,100 live traffic cameras scattered across the state, connecting with law enforcement and GEICO safety patrol to ensure Ohioans are safe on the roads, especially during inclement winter weather.

“If a local law enforcement or the highway patrol needs additional resources from us in terms of a salt truck, you know, or extra plowing out in a certain section of roadway as a response to a crash or something like that, you know, they would call our traffic management center, who would then dispatch those crews,” said Bruning.

Along with keeping yourself safe on the road, Bruning says to make sure you keep ODOT employees safe as well.

“We’ve already been struck nine times this winter, and that compares to 22 all of last winter. So we’re not off to a really good start here. And we really haven’t had a lot of winter weather across the bulk of the state,” said Bruning.

Bruning also says if you don’t have an essential trip you need to take, that’s not an emergency, then just stay home. The best way to stay informed on weather and traffic is to make sure you download the OHGO app or visit ohgo.com.
