YOUNGSTOWN — Following a deadly explosion in downtown Youngstown in May that left one person dead and displaced dozens, nearby buildings are finally set to reopen, bringing a glimmer of hope to the community.

The explosion, which devastated the Realty Building, led to the closure of neighboring businesses and forced residents of the nearby International Towers to vacate their homes. On Monday, city officials announced a plan and timeline for reopening these areas.

According to the Youngstown Fire Chief, the demolition of the Realty Building has progressed enough to allow surrounding properties and the Federal Plaza area to begin a phased reopening. Effective immediately, the Stambaugh Building has been cleared to re-open.

The International Towers is expected to reopen on Aug. 21, pending the removal of demolition debris that currently blocks the building’s fire escape. Property management will notify residents of the exact dates and procedures for returning to their homes.

Mark Canzonetta, the owner of Casa Di Canzonetta (formerly Bistro 1907), whose business was located next to the explosion site, spoke about the challenges faced over the past few months. Despite being allowed to reopen, Canzonetta plans to delay the reopening of his restaurant until the end of September, when he will relaunch under the new name Casa Di Canzonetta.

“It’s a step in the right direction for the city,” Canzonetta said. “We need a ray of light, and I think we need to be the phoenix that rises from the ashes, leading Youngstown to a bright new future.”

Meanwhile, the east side of Market Street and East Federal Street between Market and Champion streets will remain closed until the debris removal is completed.
