SWANTON TOWNSHIP, Ohio — The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission has issued a statement after series of three traffic accidents on the Ohio Turnpike Thursday killed four people and injured several others.
A truck involved in one of the crashes had been carrying sulfuric acid, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
In their statement Friday, the commission offered sympathy to those involved and highlighting the efforts of first responders.
“We offer our sincerest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. We wish a speedy recovery to those who sustained injuries,” said Ferzan Ahmed, the executive director of the commission, in a press release. “We also commend the Ohio State Highway Patrol, first responders, law enforcement agencies, local safety/medical agencies, and staff from the Ohio Turnpike for their professionalism and rescue efforts at multiple crash locations.”
The OSHP also established the exact timings of the crashes Thursday.
They say the first occurred around 5:34 a.m. close to Milepost 48 eastbound in Swanton Township. This accident, which featured four commercial vehicles and a passenger vehicle, saw one death and three others taken to hospitals.
The second of the three crashes happened just shortly after, around 5:59 a.m. close to milepost 49 eastbound in Fulton Township. This one involved the commercial vehicle with sulfuric acid, another commercial vehicle and a passenger vehicle, the OSHP says. They say the Toledo Fire Department set up a precautionary perimeter. That accident saw two deaths and “multiple injuries.”
Finally, they confirmed the third crash happened around 6:24 a.m. close to mile post 50.8, westbound in Swanton Township. Three passenger vehicles and two commercial vehicles were involved in the accident that saw one death and “multiple injuries.”
The OSHP is continuing to investigate these accidents.
