MIDDLETOWN — Despite being nicknamed “The Mother of Presidents”, the state of Ohio has never had a Vice President in the White House.

The nomination of Republican Senator JD Vance from Middletown, Ohio, as former President Donald Trump’s running mate could change that.

While Butler County tends to lean right, there are different opinions in Middletown about Vance, and many others say they need to learn more about his policies.

Middletown has a population just shy of 52,000 people and once again finds itself in the spotlight.

“It’s great. We’ve already seen interviews with some Middletown residents, which is positive I think,” Middletown resident Everett Morris said.

However, not all opinions in town echo the same tone, especially when it comes down to individual beliefs and preferences.

“I think Mr. Vance has gone from a normal person from his books, I read his books. I think he’s just shifted to the dark side. He’s got extreme views on the very right side. He’s anti-abortion, he’s anti war in Ukraine, he’s anti LGBT. He’s everything that’s anti, and I don’t like that. I like moderate people, and he’s not moderate,” said resident Dale Florence.

In a city like Middletown, it’s not uncommon for people to relate to a politician like Vance on a personal level.

“I think it’s an awesome thing that’s going to happen," said resident Kathy Cox. "I think that he is true to his words and he’s true to his heart, his values, and I have met some of his family, and I think they’re awesome."

In terms of bringing more attention to the town, Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Rick Pearce released the following statement:

“Congratulations to Sen. Vance for being named on a Presidential Ticket, that is quite an accomplishment. He has put in a significant amount of effort to be mentioned in that conversation.

Sen. Vance should be an inspiration to any young person, that if you choose, hard work and determination can change the trajectory of your future.”
