EUCLID, Ohio — Police departments across the state are honoring the life of Euclid Police Officer Jacon Derbin, 23, who was shot and killed Saturday night after responding to a disturbance call.
Authorities said after being dispatched to a home on the 300 block of East 211th Street just before 10 p.m., a gunman opened fire. Derbin had been shot and rushed to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries, according to police.
The suspect, Deshawn Anthony Vaugh, 24, was found dead inside a Shaker Heights apartment complex after a several-hour standoff with police.
Derbin, who was in his first year of service with the police department, was engaged and was planning for a wedding in July, officials said.
Throughout the state, police departments are paying tribute to the fallen officer through social media posts.
The Mentor Police Department posted on its Facbeook page, "Our hearts are heavy as we stand with the Euclid Police Department in this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all after the tragic loss of your officer. Stay strong, Euclid PD. We're here for you."
"The members of the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department stand in solidarity with the Euclid Police Department and extend our deepest condolences on the death of Police Officer Jacob Derbin," Cuyahoga County Sheriff Harold Pretel wrote in a statement. "As we embark upon Police Week, we are starkly reminded of the dangers faced by law enforcement each day. We humbly thank Euclid Police Officer Jacob Derbin for his service to our community and promise to never forget his sacrifice."
