WEST JEFFERSON, Ohio — A Columbus police officer is in stable condition after he was shot while pursuing a person who opened fire inside an Amazon facility Sunday.
The suspect, who was identified by the West Jefferson Police Department as Ali Hamsa Yusuf, an Amazon employee, was later killed in a shootout with multiple police agencies, officials said.
Shortly after 4:40 p.m. Sunday, the Madison County Sheriff's Office began to receive 911 calls reporting shots fired inside the Amazon CMH5 Fullfilment Center, 6400 SR 29 NE, in West Jefferson. Deputies responded to the scene and found no one had been injured. Yusuf fled the scene, police said.
A Columbus police officer was shot while pursing Yusuf on the west side of town, police said. The officer was transported to Grant Hospital.
Columbus Police were requested, "to assist an outside agency in investigating a shooting that occurred in that agency's jurisdiction at 4:40 p.m."
A shootout occurred between Madison County Sheriff's Office, CPD, West Jefferson Police Department and Yusuf.
West Jefferson Police said at least one shot damaged the Amazon building.
Alongside West Jefferson, Madison County Sheriff's Office and CPD, responding units included Plain City Police Department, London Police Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Jefferson Township Fire Department and Prairie Township Fire Department responded to the scene to mutually assist.
The pursuit came to an end near the intersection of Georgesville Road at Clime Road in the West Columbus neighborhood where Yusuf and the CPD officer were shot.
Yusuf was transported by Franklin Township medics to Doctors West Hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 6:57 p.m.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the police-involved shooting portion of this incident.
