Officer Jacob Derbin, 23, was shot and killed Saturday night while responding to a disturbance call. Just before 10 p.m. Saturday, Euclid Police were dispatched to a home in the 300 block of East 211th Street. Authorities said while police were investigating, a gunman opened fire, striking Derbin. He was taken to an area hospital and died from his injuries, police said.

A manhunt for the suspect, Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, 24, came to an end Sunday at a Shaker Heights apartment complex, police said. After a several-hour standoff with police, Vaughn was located dead inside.

The The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner announced Tuesday that Vaughn died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

"It is cruel irony that a mother lost her son on Mother's Day and that this murder happened just as we prepare to solemnize our fallen during Police Memorial Week. My heart burns with anger at this injustice, for the family of this young officer and the Euclid Police Department," Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost said.

Derbin was in his first year of service with the Euclid Police Department. He was engaged to be married in July, officials said during Sunday's press conference.

“In the wake of the tragic loss of our dedicated officer, we find ourselves grappling with a profound sense of sorrow and disbelief,” Euclid Mayor Kirsten Holzheimer Gail said Sunday in a statement.

“This moment calls for us, as a community, to come together in solidarity and support, not only to honor a hero who selflessly served and protected us but also to offer strength to one another in this time of grief. Let us unite in remembrance and gratitude for the sacrifice made and pledge to uphold the values of compassion, resilience and community spirit that this devastating loss so poignantly reminds us of,” Holzheimer Gail said.
