CINCINNATI, Ohio — What if an app helped style outfits for you based off of the clothes in your closet? One recent University of Cincinnati grad is working to make that happen.

What You Need To Know

  • Camryn Ellis created RYN after it took her over an hour to pick out an outfit to see friends

  • RYN uses AI to generate product images of clothes you own from pictures in your camera roll

  • The app then pairs items together to give you options on what to wear

  • Ellis hopes the app makes a stressful activity more fun and easy

Camryn Ellis has a passion for making picking out an outfit easier. And RYN is her answer to the problem.

“The average person has about 100 to 150 pieces in their closet, and we believe that you have enough clothes, you just need to learn how to leverage them," Ellis said.

The app utilizes clothes you already own and pairs them into new and unique outfits.

“The images that you’ve already taken when you’re out with your friends, and then we use generative AI to recreate that image basically so it looks more like a product image," she said.

Ellis came up with the idea when it took her more than an hour to come up with an outfit to see friends.

“I was just so overwhelmed, and I was like this is ridiculous," she said. "I feel silly that I am this overwhelmed just picking out an outfit.”

Ellis is not alone. In fact, a study by European retailer Marks & Spencer shows the average woman spends 17 minutes a day picking out an outfit, equating to six months of their life. 62% of women admitted to having tantrums due to not knowing what to wear. Meanwhile, men spend about 13 minutes a day picking out an outfit, which adds up to about four months of their life.

Ellis was a student at the time she came up with the idea and utilized all UC had to offer, from printers to make posters and stickers, to multiple pitch competitions to secure funding.

“I would not have been able to create RYN had it not been for UC," Ellis said.

The app is set to publicly launch at the end of March, and Ellis can’t believe she is a CEO and Founder at the age of 21.

“Like I’m lying sometimes," she said. "Like it doesn’t feel real.”

She said despite everything, she hopes the app is beneficial to those who find themselves overwhelmed by their closet.

“People say this actually helps, I use this on a daily basis," she said. "That would be success.”

The app will be free to download and use, with paid versions offering more features like more creative styling tips.
