LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Over 1,100 DHL Express workers at the Cincinnati Kentucky International Airport are on strike, calling for an end to what they say are “DHL’s unfair labor practices.”
DHL-CVG Workers United for Change, a group formed to help with union efforts at the shipping hub, announced the strike shortly after 10 a.m. Thursday.
On Tuesday, DHL workers said they were planning to go on strike if they couldn’t reach an agreement during contract negotiations. Workers have been pushing for better pay, among other demands.
The Teamsters represent about 1,100 employees at the DHL Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International hub. They voted to unionize in April and have been negotiating for a new contract since July. According to the Teamsters, the company told them it wouldn’t negotiate after Dec. 7, although DHL told Spectrum News 1 there was no set deadline.
Union workers voted to approve the strike at 98% and said they want better pay, benefits and working conditions.
In a statement regarding the potential strike, DHL said they were committed to work in good faith with the Teamsters.
The hub handles hundreds of thousands of pounds of cargo every day, and the strike may cause a significant stoppage.
