Cincy Shirts retail manager Nicholas Johnson has been hard at work since Wednesday making shirts to show support for Hamlin.
“Due to the severity of the situation, we weren’t really sure what to do,” said Johnson. “But then everyone was contacting us via email saying how can we help, how can we help you guys help, and that really kind of inspired us.”
The store has a variety of shirts to choose from, including one with both the Bengals' and Bills' mascots kneeling together. A fan favorite is the 513 shirt.
“513 is our area code here in Cincinnati and then you see the Bengal strips on the five and one and then three is Damar’s number so super creative job from our designers,” he said.
Over the course of two-and-a-half days, the store has sold over 10,000 shirts. Johnson said he’s proud of the outpouring of support.
“I’m surprised that the word got out so quickly,” he said. “What I’m not surprised about is that everybody wanting to help and everyone wanting to pitch in and do something.”
In this case, doing something means giving the net proceeds to Hamlin’s toy drive charity.
“Cincinnati has one of the biggest hearts in the country,” he said. “It was shown on the field. It was shown in the stands when it happened and I think it’s important for us to be a silver lining in all of this.”
Johnson said he’s glad that they can help support Hamlin and happy to hear that his health is improving.
“We support Buffalo, we support Damar and his family and the signs are positive and I just hope that that keeps increasing,” he said.
