HEBRON, Ky. — Janea Albert and her two daughters flew into the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) from Savannah, Georgia.

“We’re having a hot girl summer! I’m having a hot mom summer, you know? We’re out and about and we’re going places,” Albert said.

What You Need To Know

  • Gas prices continue to be at be high

  • CVG reports airfare prices in the fourth quarter of 2021 were positive, however, they’re monitoring things as fuel prices climb

  • Airports don't control airfare, but work with airlines to make sure there is a diverse group of flights for travelers to choose from

  • Travel is robust despite higher prices for airfare and fuel

Albert said she and her girls love getting out, and they’re doing what they can despite fuel prices and inflation.

“It’s kind of tough, honestly! Gas is going up. The prices on everything is going up. But we’re going to make it happen,” Albert said.

CVG spokesperson Mindy Kershner said they monitor airfare prices. She said the fourth quarter of 2021seemed positive.

“According to the most recent data, the most recent airfare report, our airfare average is still below the national average and that’s as demand is going up and fuel prices were starting to rise at that point. We will see what happens as the remainder of the year goes on,” Kershner said.

Kershner stressed that airfare prices don’t fall on the airport itself, but they do work with airlines to look into data and trends on travel with how many people fly and when.

“Airports don’t have anything to do with air fares but what we like to do is diversify airlines so there is some healthy competition and that can help drag down the cost,” she said.

Kershner said CVG expects to see 85-90% of the traffic they saw in 2019 in the upcoming months, leaving airlines and airports to keep up with more of a demand.

“There are flights restarting. We haven’t gotten everything back yet. Like everywhere else, the industry is seeing crew worker issues and things like that so I think it’s important to be patient,” she said.

Albert said she’s seen lots of people getting out lately.

“The world’s getting back to what it used to be, and it needs to be like that. Everybody just needs to take precaution with this whole COVID thing,” Albert said.
