GREEN TOWNSHIP, Ohio — After two years of hard work, an Ohio woman in her 40s is bouncing back from a stroke that left her partially paralyzed.

What You Need To Know

  • After insurance coverage ran out for physical therapy, Carrie Schaney decided to turn to a trainer for help

  • The two work out twice a week, varying the exercises depending on how Schaney’s doing that day

  • While the gym has helped physically, it's also helped Schaney mentally

Carrie Schaney turned to a personal trainer for rehabilitation after her insurance money ran out for physical therapy.

"That is very frustrating when you know there’s progress to be made, and you want to do the work,” said Schaney.

Schaney sought the services of Jake Moore of Adaptive Training Principles. He works out of Paramount Fitness gym in Green Township.

“Carrie’s definitely brave,” Moore said. “She didn’t grow up in gym culture, so she came in here not knowing what to expect.“

The two work out twice a week, varying the exercises depending on how Schaney’s doing that day.

“I’m using what I know about movement and my philosophies on training and adapting that to her particular circumstance,” Moore said. “She’s willing to try. I’ll give her something and she’ll look at me like, ‘You think I can do that?' And I go, ‘I think you can, but we’re going to find out.’”

Moore said Schaney has inspired him and other members at the gym.

“Most things that we take for granted in our daily lives are a big deal for her,” Moore said. “The biggest thing I remember, when she told me she could hug her son again for the first time."

“I’m a lot better at hugging again!” Schaney said. “Now that my arm is starting to work more—it’s definitely not where we want it to be, but there has been progress. Steady progress."

Her gains in the gym haven’t just been physical.

“They are very good for the mental health aspect, which I have been struggling with since my stroke as well,” Schaney said. “And just confidence, and maybe not so much necessarily the physical as much, but up here," she said, pointing to her head, "which is huge!”

Moore said everyone can learn from Schaney’s progress in the gym.

“The best thing I think you can do as far as training for yourself is always meeting yourself realistically where you are at and doing the best thing for yourself that day,” Moore said.

The two plan to keep training together so she can stay on the road to recovery.

“Jake’s my family now,” Schaney said. “Carrie’s back!”
