COLUMBUS, Ohio — National Democrats filed an objection with the Ohio Supreme Court to the already-invalidated third set of legislative maps that were re-adopted May 5.

The Ohio Organizing Collaborative joined in the objection.

The petitioners said the court should again invalidate the third plan and “should take immediate steps to compel the commission to comply with its constitutional duty and take other measures as necessary to ensure the adoption of a constitutional General Assembly plan.”

Petitioners want the court to order the Ohio Redistricting Commission to submit a new plan “under threat of sanction.”

They want the ORC to meet Tuesday and adopt a new plan by Friday. If not, they want the court to give a penalty to the “maximum degree possible.”

The ACLU of Ohio, on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Ohio, filed an objection as well Friday.

The filing said the plan was previously rejected and respondents have not provided substantive reasons to question the soundness of the court’s reasoning or conclusions in its prior opinions.

The maps the commission adopted Thursday favor Republicans in at least 54% of Ohio House and Senate districts.

However, more than a third of the Democratic-leaning districts are considered more competitive than safe.

The court said in March the third maps unfairly favored the Republican Party.
