OHIO — Ohio’s veteran unemployment rate is 9.3%, according to the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics.

What You Need To Know

  • Ohio veteran unemployment is at 9.3%

  • Recruit Military hosts virtual and in-person hiring events

  • There are over 300,000 jobs posted on their website looking for veterans

One company, Recruit Military, is trying to help bring that number down.

“I didn’t know about resources like recruit military," said veteran and Recruit Military event coordinator, Rob Reckner. "I wish I would’ve known about this because the first job I took wasn’t really a job I was interested in and I had no way of really seeing what else was out there.”

Reckner is a U.S. Army veteran who struggled to find a fulfilling job after retiring.

“A year after I graduated I was medically retired, so, I really had no idea what I was going to do," he said. "My degree was in systems engineering so I kind of just interviewed with a few companies that aligned with that, but you know I spent four years getting ready to do one job and I didn’t really know what to do.”

Now, he helps other veterans find jobs through virtual and online career fairs.

Those who sign up can find careers in industries like logistics, supply chain, e-commerce and more.

“A job search is a full-time job," Reckner said.

He also has some tips for fellow veterans attending the career fairs.

“One, obviously have resumes ready to go. Two, business professional, some companies might do interviews on the spot, (three) I’d also say follow up,” he said.

Right now, there are more than 330,000 active job listings across the country, all of them looking for the unique qualities our U.S. veterans possess.

"That part when you talk to somebody and you can hear the relief over the phone that’s what keeps me coming to work,” he said.

Recruit Military will host a national online job fair on July 6.
