OHIO — Akron-based Summa Health announced it's postponing elective surgeries until further notice as officials anticipate a rise in cases and hospitalizations within the next month.

“Given the number of people who chose to come together for Thanksgiving and the anticipated gatherings leading up to the December holidays, this number is expected to grow significantly and we must now begin to reallocate our resources to inpatient care,” Summa Health stated in a press release.

Beginning Tuesday, elective procedures that include surgical services, cardiology, endoscopy and interventional radiology will be suspended and rescheduled.

Emergency services will not be affected.

UC Health also announced it's postponing surgeries, effective Saturday. The system said it's only performing inpatient operations, emergency cases, and outpatient elective cases that don't need a hospital stay.

On Sunday, Ohio reported an additional 7,729 cases, 21 deaths and 245 hospitalizations. The state passed a grim milestone Saturday, surpassing 400,000 cases total since the pandemic began.

There's been more than 100,000 cases reported in less than two weeks.

Four counties have also entered Purple Alert Level 4 — the states worst indicator for high COVID-19 spread. Those counties are Franklin, Montgomery, Lake and Lorain.

More than 4,908 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, accounting for nearly 25% of ICU beds, according to the COVID-19 Tracking Project. Ventilator use is also increasing; more than 640 patients are on a ventilator.

On Nov. 1, only 247 people were on a ventilator.

There's less than 25% of ICU beds available. Only around 30% of inpatient beds are available.

Summa Akron City Hospital and Summa's Barberton Campus reported they are treating more than 140 COVID-19 patients.
