COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Big Ten Conference released a statement Thursday announcing the move to a Conference-only schedule this fall for all sports—men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball.

And that's if they can still participate depending on the status of COVID-19 in the next few months.

"We are facing uncertain and unprecedented times, and the health, safety and wellness of our student-athletes, coaches, game officials, and others associated with our sports programs and campuses remain our number one priority," the statement read.

The Big Ten said scholarships will be honored even if student-athletes choose to opt out of their sports during the next academic year citing coronavirus concerns.

A conference-only schedule means there would be no long-distance travel, and it would help make sure teams across the board are being tested for COVID-19. This also means seven major nonconference matchups which were scheduled years ago won't be happening, including the Ohio State Buckeyes facing off against the Oregon Ducks. The Buckeyes also won't play against Bowling Green and Buffalo.

The Big Ten is the first of the Power 5 league to announce changes for the fall. The decision came a day after Ohio State stopped voluntary workouts, as well as a day after the Ivy League decided to cancel all fall sports competitions.

"As we continue to focus on how to play this season in a safe and responsible way, based on the best advice of medical experts, we are also prepared not to play in order to ensure the health, safety and wellness of our student-athletes should the circumstances so dictate."
