CINCINNATI, Ohio—With retailers allowed to be back open today, that also means malls can open their doors too. But many Cincinnati mall-goers were disappointed to still see the majority of stores closed inside.

  • Kenwood Towne Centre opened Tuesday as retailers were allowed to reopen their doors again
  • The mall provided contact-less hand sanitizer stations as well as reminders to social distance
  • The majority of the mall's stores are still closed

Retailers are finally open and many people are coming to Kenwood Towne Centre in Cincinnati. Lots of people coming in and are seeing some stores are still closed. But they’re happy just to be able to get outside and get shopping.

Shopping may look a little different for awhile. At Kenwood, that means hand sanitizer stations, social distancing and many people wearing masks.

“I feel very safe," Brittney Evans a shopper said. "Well we all have our masks on and we have our hand sanitizers but all of the stores are making you have masks and they’re requiring you to put hand sanitizer on before you shop.”

It’s up to the stores to require customers to wear masks or even allow them to try on clothing. It’s also up to them to even open their doors. Which of Kenwood’s over 180 stores, only about 30 did.

“I thought they would take the opportunity because everyone’s been shut down for so long and they’re losing money just like everyone else," Mary Murphy a shopper said.

“It is very disappointing because I have gift cards to places that I’ve had for months now that I can’t use, so that was kind of disappointing," Evans said. "But it was still fine. It was good to get out of the house just to do something other than go to the grocery store.”

But that’s why many of the shoppers came out on the first day stores were back open.

“I was surprised when we were just turning in from the main road, how many cars were in the parking lot," Amy Sponaugle another shopper said. "So yeah, I was kind of excited though to see how many people wanted to get out just like us.”

The crowds, though, weren’t unmanageable and shoppers say they didn’t think it was an unsafe environment at all.

“It was actually pretty peaceful," Evans said. "It was a lot better than I expected. It’s not a lot of people in there, surprisingly. We were one of the first few people here though.”

While many stores are using their own safety protocols, customers say they’re happy to abide so they can get out of the house while staying safe.

“I’m just happy to be out of the house and I can’t wait for the restaurants to open so I can quit cooking,” Murphy said.

While some stores are still closed this week, many are hopeful to reopen next week.
