Elyria City schools hit the streets on Monday morning to show students they care, as they held a "honk and wave" parade.

Teachers and staff were in their decorated cars and buses touring South and East Elyria, showing support to their students who are home during this COVID-19 health crisis.

“We been a couple weeks now without our kids, so we really miss them and want to see them and a lot of kids came out and families, so it was great, great to see them, it’s been awhile,” said Dan Falk, an Elyria teacher.

“I love my students and I miss them so much and I just wanted to come out and represent Elyria City Schools and just be there for my kids,” said Anganette Hignett, an Elyria teacher.

The parade was led by the city’s police department, following a route similar to the one school buses used to take every day before the coronavirus outbreak.

Parents and students stood in the rain and were moved by the support of the teachers.

“Oh my, it’s heartwarming, wonderful can’t beat it,” said Marie Hallauer, of Elyria

“It is awesome. It made the kids realize that the teachers care and makes the teachers realize kids really care about them and we appreciate everything they do, ”said Jessica Cannistra, of Elyria

Elyria City Schools will hold another honk and wave parade on Wednesday and it will cover Elyria’s north and west sides.
