COLUMBUS, Ohio — After hanging in limbo for two weeks, the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) officially canceled the remaining winter championships on Thursday.

The events were initially postponed indefinitely back on March 12, just minutes away from the beginning of the girls state basketball tournament. That held up girls and boys basketball, team wrestling and ice hockey from being completed.

Executive Director Jerry Snodgrass said in a statement, “Our priority is the safety of our student-athletes, coaches, communities and officials. Even if our schools reopen this spring, it will be difficult to find facilities willing to host the tournaments.”

The OHSAA is already planning ways to honor the student-athletes and teams at next year’s events.

The only other events canceled in OHSAA history were two state cross country meets during World War II.

The OHSAA has still not determined if spring sports will be played, and what those seasons might look like, as schools remain closed.
