MENTOR, Ohio — The closing of bars and restaurants is hitting not just the restaurants, but those who provide the food supply.

  • Governor Mike DeWine has ordered all restaurants to close, with the exception of takeout
  • Euclid Fish Company sells wholesale seafood and has facilities in Cincinnati and Pittsburgh
  • The company started back in 1944

Euclid Fish is open for business, as it has been for several decades, long before John Young joined the family business.

"In 1944, our great grandfather created this business through a catering company doing the famous original Northeast Ohio Clambake, and then after that, it spun into supporting local fishermen out of Lake Erie,” said Young, the company’s director of purchasing.

With restaurants currently closed, he says it has been a concern for the whole industry.

"The big thing that everybody in the industry is worried about is truly making sure that everybody is still purchasing from U.S. fisheries and making sure that we can still support all the way down the line from the fisherman, harvesters and then also being able to get it to our retail customers and our own retail stores,” Young said.

While Euclid Fish has had to make adjustments like many food producers, it’s still open for curbside customers and thanking the customers for keeping the company afloat.

Carl Colombi was supposed to be skiing, but is adjusting with the help of Euclid Fish Company.

"Celebrating my wife’s birthday tomorrow. She turns forty. We’re having a crab leg dinner," said Colombi. "Everybody's in need. You gotta keep the local businesses afloat."

Young says this battle tested ship expects to weather the storm.

"From all points of acts of God, or governmental issues or anything like that, we’ve been around since ‘44, and this might be a slow bump in the road, but we’re certainly looking at continuing to accelerate throughout all this and still be able to process and serve everybody in our community and surrounding communities.”
