UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio —The city of University Heights is doing something a little different.

  • Every day at 6:30 p.m., residents of University Heights are Stepping outside to wave or chat with their neighbors
  • They say it's a way they can stay social and safe at the same time
  • The city’s mayor says it's something positive in a time of uncertainty

“I think it's great. I mean, a couple of my neighbors were just saying that they're meeting for the first time,” said Mike Sears, of University Heights.

Every day at 6:30 p.m., they’re stepping outside to say hello — from a distance.

“I think it's a great idea. I mean, so we come out to the park every weekend and meet neighbors and this has become a very social neighborhood for us and, you know, for people to be stuck in their homes, especially as the winter is starting to break and it's turning into spring, I think it's good to get people out and just to wave and say hello,” said Mike Hancock, of University Heights.

Residents take their dogs for a walks, or simply chat from across the street.

“6:30, I think it just makes it a routine and like something to look forward to, so you can get human interaction, even if it's from a distance,” said Mary Elizabeth Fenn, of University Heights.

The city’s mayor, Mike Brennan, says they didn’t come up with it on their own.

“And our thought was we could keep social distance while still being social. This was an idea, giving credit where credit was due from Madison Heights, Michigan, said Brennan. “And there was a resident on our discussion board on Facebook who said, ‘hey, this looks like a neat idea, why don't we do this,’ and we kicked it around city hall and we said, yeah why don't we try this.”

He says it’s something positive to keep that important human interaction during an uncertain time.

“This is going to be a difficult time for us in this country, here in the world, here in this city. And, and anything we can do to help us get through it better, something like this, is, is something positive, in spite of everything else going on,” said Brennan.

Brennan says he would love to see this happen all over.

But for now, every day— they’ll step outside and wave.
