CLEVELAND, Ohio—With e-scooters making a comeback in Cleveland, the city is partnering with scooter companies to make safety a top priority.

  • E-scooters are growing in popularity as a way of getting around cities across Ohio
  • Cleveland City Council approved of e-scooters in June, with regulations that include no riding on sidewalks in business districts
  • Columbus and Cincinnati already have e-scooters and Dayton passed rules to open the door for them to come to the city

Cleveland residents Robyn Marcs and Jackie Nachman are going for a ride and think e-scooters are the next step in Cleveland’s growth.

“All these others big cities have them,” said Marcs. “We’re up and coming…now we’ve become trendy and cool so we need a trendy and cool toy like a scooter.”

This is part of an educational week for the city, where folks can get a free ride, helmet, and learn the rules and regulations of the e-scooters in Cleveland— like no riding on sidewalks in business districts, no riding on streets with a speed limit over 35 mph, not exceeding a 12 mph speed limit, an 18-year age requirement, and no riding after dark.

City Council in Columbus discussed e-scooters at a hearing that took place last September.

While many were in favor of bringing them to the city, not everyone supported the idea.

Columbus ended up passing new safety regulations, which included no riding on sidewalks.

Cincinnati already has e-scooters and the Dayton City Commission earlier this year passed rules to open the door for e-scooters to come to the city.

And those riding an e-scooter for the first time call it an exciting opportunity.

“Very fun, very fast, filled with rushes,” said Grant Beard, Cleveland resident.

Whether you see them as a new way to get around or a nuisance, e-scooters are growing in Ohio—like it or not.
