WORCESTER, Mass. - In this week's edition of Covering the Bases, Spectrum News 1 caught up with Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu while he was on a rehab assignment with the Worcester Red Sox.

Abreu started by saying his injured ankle is feeling much better.

"I feel great," said Abreu. "To be honest, I feel really good. I just want to make sure how it feels in the game. But I feel really good."

Since being called up to the majors late in the 2023 season, the Venezuela native has enjoyed his time playing at historic Fenway Park.

"Playing in Fenway is amazing," Abreu said. "It’s one of the best experiences I’ve ever, ever had. Fans are great. Everything is very good."

Abreu added an important part of his rehab stint in Worcester is the mental aspect and having the confidence he can go full tilt.

"I’m just trying to feel comfortable," he said. "[I don't want to] think too much about it and come in here to be 100% ready to go back with the team and this not happen again."

The Red Sox reinstated Abreu on Saturday.
