WORCESTER, Mass. - In this edition of Covering the Bases, Worcester Red Sox pitching prospect Richard Fitts sat down with Kevin Shea. Fitts, who is having an outstanding season after an early season call-up from AA Portland, said he enjoys being part of the staff.

"We have a great group of guys here," Fitts said. "We’ve got guys from all different kinds of levels. Guys that have been in the show [and] guys that are just coming up like I am. And it’s really fun to gain a friendship with some of those guys that have also been with other teams and getting what the feel is like. Going into weeks, it’s really helpful to bounce some ideas off each other and get a game plan together."

Fitts was part of the Boston Red Sox trade of Alex Verdugo to the New York Yankees.

As a minor leaguer, Fitts has pitched for two of the higher-profile organizations in professional baseball.

"It’s leaning on guys that are here, too," Fitts said when asked about the stress of being a professional baseball player. "You know, there’s a lot of people, they don’t know what we’re going through. It’s professional baseball. It’s the greatest job in the world, but it is still a job. Leaning on the guys that are here with us, it kind of helps us take a step back and realize that we’re doing something really cool and that we are really close to our goals."
