The State Police Association of Massachusetts is concerned and confused about the state's COVID-19 vaccination requirements and suspension protocols.

President Michael Cherven said close to 200 state troopers are seeking a religious or medical exemption for the COVID-19 vaccination, which is required for state employees.

So far, at least eight state troopers have been suspended without pay. Hearings continue this week.

Cherven said state police are already struggling to recruit new officers and losing officers over the mandate could put a strain on the department.

"There is an absolute, very big concern,” said Cherven. “Prior to this coming into effect, we were down in our numbers, historically low numbers. I got on this job in '96 and I have never seen the numbers this low."

Cherven said the State Police Association is asking for the same treatment as city employees in places like Worcester, where unvaccinated employees can keep working as long as they wear a mask and get tested weekly.
