WORCESTER, Mass. - The City of Worcester recently released a draft of its Vision Zero Safety Action Plan which aims to eliminate deaths and severe injuries on city roadways.
The city's commissioner of transportation and mobility said the more than 100-page plan looks at infrastructure improvements, enforcement, and education.
Last summer, city leaders declared a road safety and traffic violence crisis due to the number of fatal crashes.
"The number of crashes that do result in serious injuries or fatalities is really, really sobering and concerning” said Stephen Rolle, the city’s Commissioner of Transportation and Mobility. “If you look at where we are now compared to where we were, say, ten years ago, that number has increased significantly. Just for some context, in an average month, there's somewhere around 450 automobile crashes in Worcester, which is a huge number. Ten or eleven of those on average will result in serious injuries or fatalities. And that's just way too many."
Residents can provide feedback on the plan at an in-person meeting at the Worcester Senior Center on Monday and virtually next Thursday.
