WORCESTER, Mass. - An item calling for a cease-fire in Gaza will be heard Tuesday night, a little more than two months after it was removed from Worcester’s City Council agenda.
The council passed on the item proposed by the Multi-faith Coalition in October, asking the city to support a cease-fire in Gaza.
It led to the meeting ending early over chanting and protests in the chamber.
The ACLU deemed the council's decision a violation of First Amendment rights.
The coalition says nearly 100 cities across the country have signed cease-fire resolutions and Worcester should be one of them.
"We have a legacy of Worcester-ites speaking up in the past against grave human rights abuses,” said Claire Schaeffer-Duffy, of the Multi-faith Coalition “So, let's lead that legacy now, let's show that we are a city with heart. We want to correct the imbalance, on resolution we want to include in our city, legacy and history a resolution that supports, and calls for a ceasefire."
The Multi-faith Coalition will hold a vigil at 5:30 p.m. before Tuesday night's City Council meeting on the third floor of City Hall.
Worcester's city clerk said in October that Rule 11 states, in part “no petition… with matters not within the general supervision and/or relating to city government… shall be placed on any city council agenda by the city clerk.”
And Rule 56 allows for the council to suspend its rules with a two-thirds vote.
