PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The Pittsfield Fire Department says an incident where a pickup truck fell through the ice on Pontoosuc Lake this weekend highlights the dangers of being on the ice during warming temperatures.
What You Need To Know
- A truck fell through the ice Saturday
- The Pittsfield Fire Department is urging people to stay off the ice
- It recommends not going out alone
The Pittsfield and Lanesborough fire departments responded to a Saturday night call of a truck that went through the ice.
There were no reported injuries, and the truck was towed out of the lake on Sunday.
A lot of the ice there has melted, but once bodies of water are frozen again, Pittsfield fire says make sure to not go out alone and call for help if you or someone you are with falls through.
“Obviously, try not to panic, try to remain calm and try to hold on to that ice shelf to help support you a little bit and give you that opportunity to stay afloat there until we can get out there with the proper equipment to get you back to safety,” said Captain Rob Leary with Pittsfield fire.
Right now, the fire department recommends people stay off all ice on bodies of water, as it is not safe to walk on. As some people fishing this weekend found out, it’s especially not safe for vehicles of any kind because there hasn’t been an extended period of freezing temperatures to strengthen the ice.
The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife says to stay off the ice if it is two inches or less in thickness, and to call 911 if someone falls in.
