BOSTON, Mass. - Rideshare workers announced a new union to represent them, one month after voters approved a ballot question allowing them to organize.

Two unions – SEIU 32BJ and the International Association of Machinists – joined to form the App Drivers Union.

SEIU said it's the first of its kind allowing contractors to collectively bargain over wages and benefits.

The new law is set to go into effect next month.

"Once the law goes into effect, there has to be a showing of 5% of drivers that drive, you know, here in Massachusetts to trigger the ability of drivers to get that list,” said Roxana Rivera, assistant to the president of the Local 32BJ. “Once we have the list of drivers, then we're going to need to collect even more cards, which is a threshold of 25% of all active drivers in the state of Massachusetts to actually be recognized as a union."

SEIU said there are more than 80,000 rideshare drivers in Massachusetts.

Question three passed in November with about 54% of state voters approving it.
