WORCESTER, Mass. - Assumption University's football team held a draft day Wednesday and made some important selections.
Almost 20 football players were matched with students from Nelson Place Elementary School as part of the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Program.
As a mentor, the football players will meet with students every week.
They'll serve as role models and be there for the "littles" to talk to and play games with.
“A lot of kids need a role model, like a lot of people don't have them or don't have a big brother, which is something I grew up with and it was always something good to have” said one of the Assumption football players partnered with a young student. “So, I think being a big brother for one of these kids is going to be really nice.”
“I’m just excited in general for what we’re going to be able to do together and I hope we become good friends,” said a Nelson Place Elementary School student.
“I just want to have an older person to look up to and talk to when I have bad emotions and I just want to have fun and look up to them,” said a Nelson Place Elementary School student.
Big Brothers and Big Sisters said they're always looking for more “bigs” to join the program.
