WORCESTER, Mass. — A Thanksgiving Eve matchup between Worcester’s North and South High School marked their 119th meeting.
The captains for the Colonels and Polar Bears met at Foley Stadium’s midfield at noontime on Wednesday. South head coach Bob LaRose said there’s nothing quite like continuing the tradition of Worcester North vs. South football.
“We've been playing this game since 1908," LaRose said. "We should continue to play this game as long as long as they can.”
Senior QB Ransford Adri was at the helm for South’s high-powered offense. Adri was responsible for a lot of scoring for the Colonels both in the air and taking it into the endzone himself.
For the Polar Bears, senior RB Christian Agyekum was all over the field including an 82-yard kick return for a touchdown to give North some momentum toward the end of the first half.
Agyekum and Adri were presented with the Most Valuable Player awards for their teams respectively with the schools’ principals handing out the trophies.
Coach LaRose said the seniors for South have a lot to celebrate as they wrap up their high school careers.
“These seniors, it's been a good group. They’ve played Bedford and Shrewsbury and St John's. They went to the playoffs three times. They won 28 games as a group; that's a lot of games for a four-year team. So, there's a lot to be proud of them for, " LaRose said. "They’ve kind of elevated our program to where we’re playing the better teams in the area. And that's where we want to stay and where we want to be.”
South went on to win the Thanksgiving-eve match up 42-12 and LaRose said he’s thankful to have the day off on Thursday.
“Love playing the day before Thanksgiving," LaRose said. "I'll be home at 3:00 and hang out all day on Thanksgiving with my friends and family. It's a good time.”
The Colonels now lead the all-time series against the Polar Bears 60-50-9.
