LANESBOROUGH, Mass. - Now that jack-o’-lantern season is over and the leaves are falling to the ground, Second Drop Farm in Lanesborough is asking for your old pumpkins and falling leaves.

What You Need To Know

  • Second Drop Farm is asking for your leaves and pumpkins.

  • The pumpkins are a good snack for their chickens.

  • The leaves will be used for mulch on their crops.

  • You can drop them off at the farm free of charge.

“This here was about 20 full contractor bags worth of leaves and you know you can see they break down pretty quickly so we need quite a bit. We’re trying to source as much as we can so we can cover this entire field in leaves for next spring,” said Michael Lupario, farm manager at Second Drop Farm.

Lupario said the farm will put your leaves to good use to use as mulch for their crops.

“Mulching is a good way to organically suppress weeds. The leaves, as well, rather than plastic, break down into a nice organic compost so that will help to hold nutrition, hold water and get our crops through the season without any pesticides, sprays things of that nature,” Lupario said.

Not only would your leaves be put to good use but your old pumpkins, free of paint or chemicals, can be used to feed their chickens.

“Jack-o’-lanterns are just great snacks for the chickens the chickens love a diverse diet. We have them in a bit of a run-in pasture throughout the year so anything we can give them to diversify the diet just makes a better egg,” said Lupario.

Another reason to give the farm leaves is with the dry weather, leaves can help fuel a brush fire.

Without them around your yard or perimeter it could help cut down on the risk.

“Sustainable forest management absolutely yeah get rid of your leaves get them out of the get the leaf litter out of the forest floor should prevent burning although I’m no expert on the matter definitely a great way to recycle your leaves though,” Lupario said.

You can drop off your leaves and pumpkins to Second Drop Farm any day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., you can reach out to them for more questions on how to drop off.
