MILLBURY, Mass. - A new support center for veterans aims to provide essential assistance and care.
Federal, state and local leaders held a ribbon cutting Wednesday for the Central Massachusetts Veterans Support Facility in Millbury.
It offers assistance like food, clothing and comfort care to military personnel and veterans in the area.
Organizers said in the last 13 weeks, they've given out more than 40-thousand pounds of food.
"We're able to supply veterans where they can walk in for free, go shopping," said Tom Foley, president of the Central Mass. Veterans Support Inc. “Everything is free, frozen food, perishable [or] nonperishable. We have a lot of great sponsors that help out with this. But the center is set up where they can just walk in. They sign in with three different types of forms of identification. We take care of retired veterans, active, inactive, widows and Gold Star mothers."
The center opened earlier this year and more than 400 veterans have signed up for their services so far.
