NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Not long after the remains of World War II veteran Pfc. Erwin King returned home, the remains of another veteran will be coming back to North Adams.
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) recently identified Army Air Force veteran Pfc. Bernard Calvi. His remains are currently in Hawaii.
Calvi joined the Army Air Corps in 1940, and was killed in action in 1942.
Veteran Services Officer Mitchell Keil said it’s always important to remember veterans.
“I think it was significant this past week with Pfc. King being so close to POW and MIA Recognition Day, but as we get further away from that, it's kind of a yearly thing that people bring up or remember. But for me and the veterans service organizations that I'm apart of, that is something that we talk about at every occasion at every meeting. There's always a flag out in honor of them and to remember them, and I think as these events continue to happen, it's going to keep that to the forefront of everybody's mind. And I think that’s the most important thing we can do, is if you go by one of those POW and MIA tables, that candle that is lit is as a guiding point to bring those POW and MIA’s home, and every time we can, it's a good day,” said Keil.
Calvi will be buried at Southview Cemetery once his remains return home.
The return home is not yet known, but a welcome home standout will be announced with a funeral at St. Elizabeth Church.
