More than a dozen volunteers from the Red Cross of Massachusetts are in Florida and Georgia helping with Helene relief efforts.

Right now, they're helping residents who couldn’t evacuate.

Volunteers are making sure they have food and a place to stay.

They said once they're able to better assess the damage, they'll determine how many more volunteers are needed.

"The first 72 hours, it's just taking care of people displaced by the hurricane. So, shelter, food and just giving them a safe place to sleep” said Red Cross Spokesperson Jeff Hall. “No one likes sleeping in a shelter, but it's probably safer than their home right now. And as you know people get anxious to get back home, that's when the real work begins to see how much help that they need and what we need for clean-up and even feeding them in their homes because they’ll be without power, without any kind of utilities for quite some time."

Red Cross said volunteers are expected to be down there for the next few months to help people get back into their homes.
