WORCESTER, Mass. – Former Auburn High School football star Owen Fitzgerald led Assumption to their first win of the season last week at Franklin Pierce.
Fitzgerald, a linebacker, had 13 solo tackles, two forced fumbles, a sack and broke up a pass. He's second in the league in tackles and leads the league in sacks.
Owen is a modest fellow who gives praise to the whole team.
"Throughout the whole week, we had a big emphasis on running to the ball and punching at it," said Fitzgerald. "And if we don't get enough turnovers, we have to do up downs and bear crawls, so we put a huge emphasis on it and everyone did a great job."
"You know what's great is it seems like that game would be different, but it really is not. That's been the consistent thing," said defensive coordinator Woody Blevins. "If you go back and look at his stat line from Kutztown, it's equally as crazy. I think he had two sacks, a pass broken up and double-digit tackles. And Kutztown is a top 10 team in the country."
Assumption is off this week. The team host their first home game of the season Friday, Sept. 27 against Post University.
