WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The Big E is in full swing and Thursday marked Massachusetts Day at the exposition.

What You Need To Know

  • The Big E runs Sept. 13-29 this year

  • The Big E is the largest event on the East Coast and the seventh largest fair in North America, according to their website

  • Thursday, Sept. 19 marked "Massachusetts Day" at the exposition

Whether they’re from the Bay State or just over the state line, folks at The Big E on Thursday said there’s a lot to like about Massachusetts.

“I like all four seasons of the state," Keith Witcher from Oakham said. "Very nice.”

“I work in Mass, actually," Sara Tuffield from Connecticut said. "We like a lot of things in Mass. We went to the Springfield Armory, which is a lot of fun; that's in Mass. Boston. Traveling, I guess, to Mass.”

“Massachusetts is a great state," Joey’s Deli & Market owner Jonathan Cunningham said. "It's close to the city, it's close to the beach and it's close to the mountains. And I love Massachusetts.”

And you can’t forget about the cranberries. Brian Wick and Massachusetts Cranberries brought the traveling bog to the fair.

“The industry started here in Massachusetts. It's a native plant to our region. So, they're growing exactly where Mother Nature intended them," Massachusetts Cranberries executive director Brian Wick said. "Because cranberries are only found in the southeastern part of the state, we bring the cranberries to the people.”

Between berries, beers and bees, Cunningham said you can find the best of the best in Mass; including whoopie pies.

“We have the best here in Joey's Deli. Nobody makes them like us," Cunningham said. "Ours is a unique product and we're selling thousands of them over here.”

Outside of Massachusetts Day, people love what The Big E has to offer.

“We definitely love the state houses," Tuffield said.

“We come here every year. It's a lot of fun," Witcher said. "Seeing all the food courts and all that, you know, all the animals.”

“It's definitely a bigger crowd than last year, for sure. And we're doing better every day than we did last year," Cunningham said. "So that's a good thing. That means people are coming back for more, coming back for seconds.”

Whether it’s your first time at The Big E or you’re headed back for more, you’ve got until Sunday, Sept. 29 to stop by and celebrate Massachusetts and all the New England states.
