WORCESTER, Mass. – Despite pushback from Worcester city leaders, a university in the city has purchased two hotels for a combined $46 million, according to the registry of deeds.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) plans to turn them into student housing.

The Worcester District Registry of Deeds confirmed an LLC with WPI’s address bought the Courtyard for $25.6 million and the Hampton Inn and Suites for $20.4 million.

The Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce said the school's actions without consulting city leaders undermines the purpose of Gateway Park.

WPI said last month both hotels will pay city taxes before they're transitioned to student housing.

It said the Hampton Inn will change over in 2026, while the Courtyard Marriott will operate as a hotel through at least 2030.
