BOYLSTON, Mass. - The Enchanted Forest Exhibition is running now through Halloween at New England Botanic Garden.

“As we wander through, we will see 31 total fairy houses that are hidden among the flora out here in the garden," Marissa Gallant said. "Some are harder to find than others, so you'll have to keep your eyes open.”

The Enchanted Forest is taking over the Ramble, which is the 1.5-acre children's garden open to all ages. Gallant said the focus is our connection to the natural world and finding wonder and magic in it through houses of all shapes and sizes.

“This one here has kind of a stump that is filled in into which is really unique, really interesting," Gallant said. "Some have more of like a palace feel, while some are really small and intimate.”

This is the second time the Enchanted Forest is taking over the garden. Artist Sally J. Smith from the Adirondacks of New York returned after first creating it in 2022 and has brought back some favorite pieces.

“This is my favorite house Fairy Glen Manor," Gallant said. "This is actually a house that was displayed previously in 2022 and it's come back and we put it up on risers this year so you can really get close to it and it right at eye level.”

Gallant said each carefully crafted house takes Smith weeks to build and in total the exhibition is the product of nearly a year of planning. Like many other installations at Tower Hill, the Enchanted Forest is all about putting a spotlight on the beauty of nature.

“With everything we do here at the Garden, sustainability is very important to us," Gallant said. "What's unique and interesting with this exhibit is that the artist actually uses a lot of found natural materials in her displays. So as we go and look at some of the houses a little bit closer, you'll notice some things like bark, twigs, acorns, moss, things that were found along her travels in New York. And she also uses things that are nature inspired.”

New England Botanic Garden announced starting on Sept. 21 they’ll be hosting Fairies Aglow on select Friday and Saturday nights where all of those houses will be lit up at night.

They’ll also host ‘Fairy Fest’ the weekend of Oct. 12.
