PITTSFIELD, Mass. - The Berkshire Humane Society has guinea pigs, rabbits, and even a ferret looking for a good home. They’re hoping that waiving adoption fees for small animals this weekend will bring more prospective owners through the doors.

About eight small animals are up for adoption this week. The adoption fees will be waived Friday, Sept. 6 through Sunday, Sept. 8.

The Humane Society says they have seen people giving these animals up to the organization because owners do not realize how much work goes into caring for them.

“I think people don’t realize the amount of work it takes to care for a small mammal so I think that’s why so many of our shelters are overflowing this last year or so with small type of animals and I know we're also seeing an increase with people dumping them as well,” said Berkshire Humane Society’s executive director, John Perreault.

Two guinea pigs available for adoption were found abandoned at Wahconah Falls. A ferret, two rabbits and three more guinea pigs are available right now, as well.

The “Pink Piggy Club” adoption event as it’s known hopes to get homes for small animals overcrowding some shelters around the Commonwealth.

This small animal adopt-a-thon is also taking place at the Worcester Animal Rescue League.

You can visit the shelter or see some of the adoptable small pets on their website.
