BOSTON — In a press conference Friday afternoon, Gov. Maura Healey (D-Massachusetts) announced they were able to save five of the seven Steward Health Care hospitals in Massachusetts, but they couldn’t find buyers for Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer and Carney Hospital in Dorchester, which means they will have to close.

What You Need To Know

  • Five of seven Steward Health Care hospitals will remain open.

  • Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer and Carney Hospital in Dorchester will close.

  • Gov. Healey says that Steward Health Care’s poor management of those two hospitals made them unappealing to potential buyers.

  • Carney Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center will be closing on Aug. 31, 2024.

“I also want to say something about Carney and Nashoba because the news today is good, but not for everyone,” said Healey. “I understand that the community patients, workers in Carney Hospital in the Nashoba Valley Medical Center, are rightly upset about these closures, and I want them to know that I am too.”

Healey says that Steward Health Care’s poor management of those two hospitals made them unappealing to potential buyers. The five hospitals saved will be run by other hospital systems in the state. One hospital, St. Elizabeth’s in Brighton, will be purchased by the state by eminent domain for $4.5 million. Healey was not able to do the same for Carney or Nashoba Valley.

“The good news is we have an agreement,” she said. “We have an agreement that's going to save hospitals. It's going to protect patients. It's going to protect jobs.”

Earlier this year, there was worry across the state all the hospitals would close causing major back-up issues in care at remaining hospitals. Healey says this plan needed to happen to protect patient care.

The state will be holding job fairs for those who will lose their jobs.

Spectrum News 1 reached out to Steward Health Care about the governor’s claims against them. They said that they do not have a response.

They said Nashoba Valley Medical Center will be closing on Aug. 31, 2024.
